As an educator of over 20 years, I have supported countless children through the reading journey. The first half of my career I taught in elementary classrooms and was baffled that some of my students couldn’t learn to read. I hadn’t been provided with in depth training in my Teacher Preparation program so I had to find ways to support students on my own. Once I had a family and one of my own daughters struggled to read, that experience launched me down the path to understanding reading differences. I have built multiple intervention systems for different school systems and have helped organizations align their efforts in literacy. Our public schools have wrestled with this issue for long enough and the solution is clear. This is a solvable issue and students need schools to create a plan now. With the current science of reading research, strong leadership, and a clear coherent literacy plan, schools can take the preliminary steps forward to supporting all students down their reading pathway.
Experience:

After teaching in the classroom for 15 years, I was hired to co-develop a Literacy Program for a school district. We created an intervention system that provided systematic, explicit reading instruction for students who were struggling to learn to read. After getting my administrative credential, I was hired as the Assistant Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction for a large public Charter School. Through this work I assessed the current practices and reorganized the system to create a coherent system of intervention and instruction across all Tiers and the student academic gains have been explosive.
